Your world wide WASH development sector social network | MyWASH.org

Welcome to your WASH network!

Dear All,

Think big:
The WASH social network http://www.MyWASH.org went live technically:
- the URL is set;
- there is enough bandwidth / storage space;
- the unneccesary links are removed;
- no more advertisement.
The aim of MyWASH is: The MyWASH social network is a major arena and communication back-bone in the WASH development sector connecting information and knowledge-able members for universal access and use. See http://www.mywash.org/page/mywash-mission. I kindly invite you to contribute and help.

Start small:
I kindly invite you to sign in / sign up and fill out your profile.
Once logged in you can change your settings (http://www.mywash.org/profiles/settings/editProfileInfo).
Also you have control over 'privacy', Email' and 'Your page'.
Please have a look, most is self-explanatory and help is at http://help.ning.com.
When needed contact me for help (or Ewen / Nick / Harry).

Act now:
Second I would like you to start a group (http://www.mywash.org/groups) around the service / product you manage:
- Bettie on 'Library services' or 'Digital library'
- Ingeborg on 'Q&A' (http://www.mywash.org/group/qanda), 'Thesaurus' etc
- Cor / Dick for Source (http://www.mywash.org/group/source)
- etc

If you are done with the above you can start inviting colleagues in- and outside IRC to the network.

This is the first small step to get this MyWASH network populated. If there are issues just post them on http://www.mywash.org/forum/topics/this-mywash-social-network. Together with reply / answers this will grow into a Q&A :-)

For any question contact me. I will organize monthly sessions for Q&A and review soonest.

Best, Jaap

on behalf of Nick ...

Dear Jaap and INCOers,

Congratulations for getting this started. It would be good if a small group of INCOers could help think about the interface of the Ning group. I hope that I am not repeating anything obvious that may have already been discussed at the INCO meeting.

Right now it is messy from both a design perspective (to make it outwardly attractive to use) and \ the basic information that people should receive or see when they first log into the network. People should immediately get an idea of what they can do/explore/use/download/upload.

Also it would be good to come up with some kind of identity (what does this network do/what is it) and branding for the MyWash products and IRC info products.

Russell, perhaps a workshop along the lines of the one that we did with Triple-S would be useful? It will be important to get this right if we want the whole sector to become involved. We should at least have a uniform vision at IRC.

Greetings from Ghana (finally made it after 14 hours parked in 2 different planes at Heathrow...).

Nick
Jaap commented on Nick's proposal to include this in a regular Q and A session. As i attended the same 1 day work session with Nick at ThinkAgainMedia, nick suggestion is actually to plan for a more focussed exercise that also requires more time. We might be able to it in less time, it would still require at least 1/2 day to be able to come up with a short story line that clearly explains the ambitions of MyWASH. In our travel report I have explained some of the basic exercises involved, if Nick chips his story we can hopefully make this contribution to MyWASH.
Hi Russell,

Thanks for posting my reply. I will now work on our report and let's post it here when it is done. It should illustrate what we did pretty well in terms of process.

Cheers,

Nick
Hi All,
Sorry to confuse you if I do, but I wonder if this message thread should not be direct on e-mail. I made an email group mywash@googlegroups.com.
In the current situation a message is made / thread started, and e-mail is narrow casted to group members apart from users opting out. Opting out / in is offered below every message!
The email is read and included / referencing links to threads are clicked. On line; messages are read and responded on; generating the above mentioned narrow casting.

On second though I think this way is better then broad casting though Google groups. The difference is made by narrow or broad casting; Google groups are just broad casting. When wanted / done by users the same discussion can run both on MyWASH and groups; redundancy is a reason to connect threads / networks. Boundary spanners help here. Ultimately the community decide where the discussion threads runs.
Yes, this is confusing. You invite us to start a discussion, once done, you reverse the order and give an explanation that is abstract, content wise off -topic and introduces further terms, that have little to do with the proposed direction of the discussion. My response to this is: Let's just pull the plug on this.
Russell,
As said, the community will decode where the discussion will run. Pulling the plug I understand as NOT discuss this aspect further. I do ccontinue to publish her on the development of the network.
Cheers, Jaap
Whether it describes the G8, anti-globalisation protest movements, Facebook or al-Qaeda, the word ‘network’ is among the most ubiquitous and pervasive of buzz-words. But is it more than simply buzz? What do networks actually do, and how do they work? An ODI working paper of 2009 on networks.
